Compassion has been shown to improve many dimensions of healthcare, including patient health outcomes, patient satisfaction, clinician well-being, team well-being, and quality and process of care. While compassion is an inherent quality we all have as human beings, it is an orientation and skill that can be cultivated and strengthened so that it becomes the default place from which we approach and respond to any situation.

Beginning February 2, CPCA and the Compassion Institute are offering a six-week Compassion at Work: Preventing Burnout in Health Care series. The goal of the course is twofold: (1) to increase both clinicians' self-awareness around their experiences of burnout and their connection to purpose and joy in work, and (2) to equip clinicians with mindful awareness and compassion-based skills and tools to support resilience that can be integrated seamlessly into their busy daily schedules. The training is designed to help clinicians cultivate and sustain new habits without adding to existing time pressures.

The Compassion Institute (CI) is a global advocate for compassion education, programs, and research. Their work was initiated at Stanford University School of Medicine Neurosciences Institute in 2009 to support human health, well-being, and interpersonal relationships within organizations and communities. Programs are developed by thought leaders and industry experts in compassion science and education, contemplative science, psychology, healthcare, and social sciences.

Tuesday, 02/02/21:  Settling the Mind

The first session is an orientation to the course content, facilitator, and fellow participants. Themes include how to settle the mind and nervous system, and self-awareness. Maslach’s three domains of burnout are briefly discussed, for participants to develop an awareness of the signs and seeds of burnout, and to identify when and how to use mindfulness and compassion-based practices to buffer against its effects.

Tuesday, 02/09/21:  Intention Setting and Emotion Regulation

Session two deepens participants’ capacity for awareness, in relation to their minds, emotions, neurophysiology, and environment. Against this backdrop, one’s stress response and alternative responses are investigated.

Tuesday, 02/23/21:  Loving-Kindness and Self-Appreciation

This session examines the quality of loving-kindness to familiarize ourselves with what it feels like, so that we can extend this care to ourselves. Self-appreciation is offered as a stepping stone to self-care and self-compassion.

Tuesday, 03/02/21:  Self-Care and Self-Compassion

Session four explores the science of self-compassion and its benefits, as well as the obstacles and fears of self-compassion. Self-compassion is offered as the healthier alternative to self-criticism and pushing through, supported by evidence that it is not only better for our physical and mental health, but also our performance.

Tuesday, 03/09/21:  Empathy, Compassion, and Resilience

This week is dedicated to the difference between empathy and compassion, and building the capacity to both be present for problems and suffering while proactively responding from an inner stance of strength, care, and stability.

Tuesday, 03/16/21:  Integration

The final session will focus on integrating the learnings and practices from previous weeks, to support learners to sustain the benefits of the course moving forward.
