Supporting Pregnant Patients: Work Notes, Leave, and CA SDI

When:  Aug 17, 2022 from 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM (ET)

DATE:  August 17th, 2022
TIME:  10:00am-11:30am

The ability to access pregnancy and breastfeeding-related legal protections at work can be critical to the health and wellbeing of workers and their families. Health care providers are regularly asked to provide work notes for pregnant and breastfeeding patients who may need a leave of absence or adjustments to how, when, or where their job is done. While an improperly written work note can result in the patient losing her job or being forced out on leave, an effectively written work note can ensure the patient will receive what they need to stay safe and healthy. Health care providers can further play an important role by helping patients access critical income replacement during an otherwise unpaid leave and incorporating discussions about workplace issues into care conversations. The speakers will provide an overview of pregnancy-related employment rights (such as pregnancy and breastfeeding accommodations and leave), discuss how write an effective work note, and explain how health care providers can help patients access critical income replacement through California’s State Disability Insurance (SDI) program.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  • After the lecture the learner will understand the laws that protect pregnant and postpartum people in the workplace, including those that require employers to provide pregnancy and breastfeeding accommodations and leave.
  • After the lecture the learner will understand the unintended negative consequences that inappropriately written work accommodation notes may have for patients.
  • After the lecture the learner will have learned how to write work accommodation notes for pregnant patients that are medically and legally appropriate, as well as where to go for additional resources.
  • After the lecture the learner will understand the legal right pregnant and postpartum people working in agriculture and other potentially hazardous jobs may have to income replacement (such as disability benefits) when taking leave.
  • After the lecture the learner will understand the role of the health care provider in supporting pregnant and postpartum patients’ abilities to access workplace accommodations, leave, and income replacement.

*Last year, in recognition of the tremendous financial stress members were facing and to ensure that important and timely information could be accessed with no barriers, CPCA elected to waive training fees for the entire membership year (April 1,2020- March 31, 2021) and offer all training at no cost. As we continue to work in this pandemic environment to provide members the support they need, we must also plan for the future while supporting community health centers in improving the health status of their communities through advocacy, education, and services. Which is why the Board of Directors approved a budget in February that reflects a reinstatement of training fees effective for trainings taking place on or after April 1, 2021. If you have any questions or concerns about this change, please email us at training@cpca.org.
